Ludwig Favre photographs the Joie de Vivre hotel in Palm Springs as part of his long study of California desert modernism. The frame holds the building level, square to its façade, in the flat light of early afternoon: blue stucco, Spanish-revival angles, the words painted across the wall like a small architectural promise. The photographer has spent several years cataloguing the city's mid-century hotels, returning to the same buildings in different seasons to watch the paint and the light age together.
